In an emotional speech, former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has officially announced his retirement from politics
Shocking resignation
In a speech to parliament, the 56 year old former Labor Party leader said he had not arrived at the decision lightly, as it had “been the product of much soul searching” with his family “over the last few months.”
Rudd served as country leader twice.
He led Labor into the general election in September, which saw the Liberal National coalition of Tony Abott elected.
He wished Abbott well, saying that being a leader “was the hardest job in the land.”
Future plans
Amid glory and grand speeches, trouble was rumbling for the man. His leadership was seen as dysfunctional and autocratic.
Despite “hurtful” comments that he received, he bore no one any malice.
Rudd said his future plans included conducting a “national apology foundation,” in relation with his apology statement given to indigenous Australians, which he claimed was one of his biggest accomplishments as prime minister.
Even in retreat, he intended to stay active in the international community, in locations that included global economic governance, climate change, and China issues.
