SLOW AND STEADY START-UP PLAN

Conventional start-up enterprise accelerators require several things, like a great pitch they need to follow through, a sizeable loan, an expert they have to pay for marketing advice, legal representation, and the new entrepreneurs need to create a legal entity. All these things take time and money. While most start-up enterprisers may recognize how much time they need, they probably lack the funding to do what they want.

In Detroit, former home of a robust automotive industry that has since gone, a new and unique start-up incubator is housing new tech business owners for anywhere between $50 to $1000 a month. Tom Brennan, a former employee of global consulting firm Accenture, founded the Green Garage to help founders begin their endeavors free from the initial pressures common in regular incubators. Brennan explained that instead of rushing the businesses into the marketplace, he wants to help the people behind them create a lasting and lucrative plan.

Brennan and his wife Peggy own an 11,500 square foot space in the middle of Detroit’s dilapidated warehouses. This place is home to 20 start-ups with owner-employees numbering between one and five each. The participants help in keeping a community garden and in operating a weekly open house for encouraging collaboration. Refurbished furniture company Mend founder Jason Peet said the Green Garage’s style of prioritizing quality over speed has helped him save funds and provided him some much needed inspiration. He added that a business’s core should be really solid before the founders moved forward.
